Reduction in Class Size/New Schedules at the Secondary Levels

Due to larger than projected class sizes, the district was able to add additional staffing at four grade levels at the elementary grade K-4 level this fall which support our Board’s commitment toward lowering class sizes.

Furthermore, we were able to add one additional teaching position through the budget process at Tom McCall Upper Elementary School to support minor class size reduction as well for the 2018-19 school year.

Both Neil Armstrong Middle School and Forest Grove High School have added an additional class period to the daily bell schedule. The middle school is now on a seven period day and the high school is on a 4 by 4 (8 period) schedule. The result is that students are able to access an additional elective class; expanded curricular/program offerings; and a significant reduction in overall class sizes at both schools. These schedules were in place prior to the massive reductions resulting from the Great Recession and thanks to additional staffing by our district budget committee and school board along with Measure 98 / High School Success funding we are able to make these additions.
