AVID Program Strategies and Supports

AVID  (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program which provides scaffolded support that educators and students need to encourage college and career readiness and success.  AVID began three years ago at the high school level and has expanded to grades 9-11 this year. Due to multiple grants, we were able to send teams from Echo Shaw, Tom McCall and Neil Armstrong this past summer to Summer Institute training.  As a district, we currently have almost 100 teachers, counselors and administrators trained in AVID strategies.

One of the results from AVID training is our ability to focus our “Instructional Toolkit” around WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading) strategies, supporting previous professional development around research based instructional practices that include Marzano and Hattie’s work.  For a quick overview of what AVID is and how it benefits students, please access the following https://www.avid.org/what-avid-is
