Dear FGSD Families,
I want to make you aware of a very serious situation that is happening across our state and in school districts – the distribution of the deadly drug fentanyl. You may have recently read about two student deaths due to accidental fentanyl overdoses in the Portland Public School District. Last year, another student from the Beaverton School District died due to a similar situation. This is a tragic loss of life.
Today I am sharing information with you about the dangers of the drug fentanyl and implore you to speak with your students about the dangers associated with it. The following information comes from resources put out by Washington County Health:
- Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is up to 100 times stronger than morphine. Pharmaceutical fentanyl is prescribed for severe pain and anesthesia, but fentanyl is also illegally manufactured and distributed.
- Fentanyl is often mixed into fake pills. It can also be mixed with or sold as prescription pills like Oxycontin and Xanax that come from a pharmacy.
- Fentanyl can make a person stop breathing within minutes.
- Counterfeit pills are especially dangerous because people are often unaware that fentanyl is in them.
- You should never take medication that comes from a source other than your medical professional.
