FGSD Administration Changes

Over the past few months the district has experienced changes in administrative leadership with three of our principals leaving to pursue different opportunities. With change comes opportunity. I typically do not appoint individuals into positions without running a comprehensive hiring process. However, with school starting in just a few days, I am confident that the appointment of these new administrators will assist in a smooth transition for our staff and students as we begin the new school year.


As I have communicated previously, Naomi Montelongo, Principal at Fern Hill Elementary, has accepted a new position with Portland Public Schools. I have appointed Rogelio Martinez, current Assistant Principal at Tom McCall Upper Elementary, as the Interim Principal at Fern Hill Elementary for the 2018-2019 school year. Mr. Martinez brings with him 11 years of administrative experience and will do a wonderful job in leading the staff and students of Fern Hill. He has served as the Assistant Principal at Tom McCall for the past six years and prior to that as the principal at Echo Shaw Elementary for five years.


I have also asked Brian Gamble to move from half-time to full-time Dean of Students at Tom McCall for the 2018-2019 school year. Mr. Gamble has been serving as the part-time Dean of Students since 2010. Brian's knowledge and relationships with students, staff and parents will ensure that the continuity of a great learning environment continues at Tom McCall during this transition in leadership.  


Lastly, I have asked Kelly Trout to fill the vacant Student Services Coordinator position created by the appointment of Toby O’Handley as the Interim Vice Principal at Joseph Gale Elementary. Kelly has been a special education facilitator for ten years in our district and has also taught in elementary school for five years. She is a Forest Grove High School grad and has a masters degree in education. I know that Kelly will be a great asset to the Student Services team as she supports both special education and general education teachers and delivers services to students experiencing disabilities.


As I have stated previously, we will begin a comprehensive hiring process in early 2019 to fill the positions at Fern Hill and Joseph Gale. I am committed to hiring the best candidates to lead our our staff and students on a permanent basis.
